Beaver Head Light Station

So after Rob and I got settled into out hotel room we decided to head out into the woods for some exploration. The island is pretty large so we decided if we were going to see the entire thing in our short trip we would have to rent a car. (Renting was cheaper for us than bringing our car over on the ferry).

They have a rental place that only has geo-trackers. They had one in every color of the rainbow! We got the color I wanted :)

This is the Beaver Head Light, which they actually use as a school now. It was really interesting to see all the teaching tools set up in this environment. This light was originally built in 1858!

We made a friend! I almost crushed it on accident...

The really cool thing is that we were able to climb the tower.

The beach was so peaceful. No one was around at all.

Whiskey Point Light

So here are the close-ups of the St. James Harbor light (also known as the Whiskey Point Light) that greeted us as we came upon Beaver Island's harbor. The light was actually built on Beaver Island in 1856. So named because the first white settlers there had made most there money from trading provisions (mostly whiskey). This is only one of the lights on Beaver Island. We traveled to see the other light after we got at good nights sleep. While this light was only the tower, the other still had the living quarters intact. In fact the children of Beaver Island have classes there! I will certainly post more about that soon.

The Emerald Isle

Our ride over to Beaver Island was peaceful. The water was calm and we spent a good amount of the time reading. But as we grew near the island we couldn't resist moving up to the top deck to get some pictures.

The ride over on the Emerald Isle is about two hours. Just enough time to relax and not so much that you start getting anxious. I would love to go back someday.

I am an avid lighthouse fan so this was a treat for me! On our trip we ended up seeing three lighthouses I have never seen before. Of course my posts will get to that later. I will have to show you some up-close pictures of this lighthouse in my next post.

Platte River Fish Hatchery

One of these days I will get through all of the photos I took last summer. Rob and I had friends that got married on Beaver Island last summer so we made the drive up to Charlevoix and jumped on a ferry over there. But before that we stopped in whatever towns we thought would be interesting to see. This fish hatchery was one of our stops. Unfortunately while I did have the camera, I didn't remember to take many photos while we were there.

Rob has wanted to start his own fish hatchery (on a much smaller scale obviously) for quite some time now so this was an especially cool experience for us to share.

Vintage Luggage

I had been looking for vintage inspired luggage all over, but I should have known the real thing would be better! I was at an estate sale with my parents a few months ago and found this lovely pair. For $5 I couldn't leave them there.

Somewhere I'll Miss

Continuing on with my theme of photos taken last summer, these are from a random sunny day while Rob and I were on a walk through the fields by his house. He grew up there for a large portion of his life and the house sold last winter. It is somewhat sad to look back at these photos. Such a wonderful place I will never be going back to. In a way I grew up there too. It's like a part of your youth just slips away.
